The yew tree is the most ancient of trees with some trees thought to be thousands of years old. In old age they have a distinctive gnarled shape with some branches curving down to the ground and taking root.  Yew has a smooth Golden Grain

A birch is a thin-leaved deciduous hardwood tree of the genus Betula, in the family Betulaceae, which also includes alders, hazels, and hornbeams. It is closely related to the beech-oak family Fagaceae.  They are typically a rather short-lived pioneer species widespread in the Northern Hemisphere, particularly in northern areas of temperate climates and in boreal climates.  The Birch has a soft pale grain

Elms are deciduous and semi-deciduous trees .  They first appeared in the Miocene geological period about 20 million years ago, originating in what is now central Asia. These trees flourished and spread over most of the Northern Hemisphere

Irish Oak is the hardest of the Irish hardwoods. The sapwood and the heartwood are almost the same color from light brown to dark brown. It is often referred to as “pippy oak” or “cats paw oak” and is so named because of the frequent small knots and knot clusters which appear on the board and very much resemble a cats paw mark.

Splated Beech from the trees known as The Dark Hedges used in the Game of Thrones Series.  Spalted Beech is a natural beech wood that has aged for several years. When the aging environment is just right the process generates beautiful patterns throughout the wood.

Ancient forests once covered Ireland.  Huge oaks, yew and pine that grew and died since the last ice age some 10,000 years ago.  The term bog oak is often used to describe all types of bog wood.

Some roots and even trunks were buried in the wet marshy land much of which lay undisturbed for up to 7,000 years, preserved in its enclosed environment, hidden from our view.

Wych Elm is the only Elm that is regarded as being truly native to the UK.  As a result of Dutch Elm disease, Wych Elm is now rare. It usually grows in hilly or rocky woodlands, or beside streams and ditches.
